Irish Baseball Programs: 2017 Overview

The Baseball United Foundation is proud of the role we played in developing the game of baseball in Ireland in 2017. Through our ongoing partnership with Baseball Ireland, we assembled the first ever Irish Junior National Baseball Team. The team went to the 18U European Baseball Championships and won the first gold medal in the history of Irish Baseball! Scroll down for details!

Growing the Game of Baseball in Ireland

Over the years, our goal has been to support and strengthen youth and amateur baseball in Ireland, by providing coaching, equipment, funding, and logistical support to the teams and players in Ireland. Here are just a few of the projects we’ve been working on:

  • 2013: We raised over $3,000 of early stage funding for a baseball field construction project in Ashbourne, Ireland. The field opened for play in 2015!
  • 2014: We brought 14-year old Liam Shier to the USA to spend one week playing and training with American teams and coaches. Liam continued his development as a baseball player and was a member of the gold medal winning Irish Junior National Baseball Team in 2017!
  • 2015: We brought 17-year old catcher Paul Carey from Ireland to New York to attend a Nike Baseball Camp. Paul is now a catcher for the Irish Men’s National Baseball Team!
  • 2016: We sent American baseball coach Eric Helmrich over to Ashbourne, Ireland to run baseball camps and clinics for Little Leaguers.
  • 2017: We organized the first ever 18U Irish Junior National Baseball Team. See below for details!

By bringing Irish baseball players to the US and sending American coaches and players to Ireland, we are able to raise the level of play in Ireland while fostering friendships and camaraderie among players, coaches, and families on both sides of the Atlantic Ocean.

Irish Junior National Baseball Team Wins the Gold Medal in Zurich!

The 2017 Irish Junior National Baseball Team in Zurich, Switzerland.

In July 2017, the first ever 18U Irish Junior National Baseball Team won the gold medal at the European Championship tournament in Zurich, Switzerland! The Baseball United Foundation worked on behalf of Baseball Ireland to recruit the team and organize the trip. The process lasted ten months, beginning in late summer 2016 and going through the end of the tournament in early July.

Players were recruited from all over Ireland and the United States. The US-based players all had to qualify for Irish citizenship. The Baseball United Foundation worked closely with the players, their families, and the Irish government, to ensure that all eligible players received their Irish passports in time for the tournament.

They couldn’t have won the gold medal without support from baseball fans like you. Click here to help us support the Irish Junior National Baseball Team.

Irish Baseball Player Attends Nike Baseball Camp in New York

Irish Baseball Player Fionn Gallaher-Hall Traveled to NY to attend the Nike Baseball Camp.

In August 2017, we brought 17-year old Fionn Gallaher-Hall to New York for the Nike Baseball Camp at Mercy College in Dobbs Ferry, NY. Fionn spent one week playing and training with talented players and coaches from around the USA.

Fionn’s trip to the USA was funded entirely by the Baseball United Foundation, as part of our Baseball Exchange program.

At the end of his stay in the US, Fionn returned home to Ashbourne, County Meath, eager to teach what he learned to Little Leaguers in his hometown.

The Baseball Exchange program is the cornerstone of our work in Ireland. By bringing Irish baseball players to the US and sending American coaches to Ireland, we are able to raise the level of play in Ireland while fostering friendships and camaraderie among players, coaches, and families on both sides of the Atlantic Ocean.
