17-Year Old From County Meath, Ireland Will Train at Nike Baseball Camp
New York, NY – August 3, 2015 – Irish teenager Paul Carey dreams of one day playing college baseball in America. With some help from The Baseball United Foundation and Nike Baseball Camps, Paul’s dream could become a reality.
Paul, a 17-year old catcher from County Meath, Ireland, will be participating in the Nike Baseball Camp at Mercy College in New York from August 9-13.
Paul’s visit to America is part of the Baseball United Foundation’s “Baseball Exchange Program,” which brings talented international youth baseball players to America, to help them learn the game through advanced instruction from professionals.
Headquartered in New York, The Baseball United Foundation raises funds to develop the sport abroad. The non-profit organization regularly sends equipment and American coaches to Ireland to hold youth baseball clinics there.
Paul – who plays on the Irish National Baseball Team – was selected as a deserving player with a passion and skill for the game of baseball. He was originally noticed by MLB scout John Tumminia during a charity youth baseball clinic in Ireland.
“I met Paul when he was 15 years old,” explains Tumminia. “At that time, I was impressed with his setup and lateral agility. He gave the pitcher a firm target and he displayed an overall level of raw talent that made him a prospect.”
“We think Paul will learn a lot while he’s here and the experience will be a benefit to his development as a baseball player,” explained Baseball United Foundation founder John Fitzgerald. “We hope he will share what he learns at the Nike Baseball Camp to teach his teammates back home in Ireland and also serve as an example to Irish Little Leaguers who hope to play baseball at a high level.”
Baseball has been played in Ireland since the early 1990s. Today, over 500 youth and adult players participate in the sport, throughout Ireland. In addition, Ireland’s Youth and Adult National Teams participate in European competition.
