The 18U Irish Junior National Baseball Team has won the gold medal at the 18U European Championship Tournament in Zurich, Switzerland.
The 2017 18U team is Ireland’s first national team in the Under-18 age division. Ireland has competed internationally in the men’s senior division since 1996.
Ireland outscored the competition 65-17 on their way to a 5-0 record:
- Ireland 18 – Belgium 3
- Ireland 9 – Switzerland 0
- Ireland 10 – Poland 7
- Ireland 16 – Russia 7
- Ireland 12 – Belgium 0
Irish pitcher Kevin Brady took home the Best Pitcher award. Brady threw a no-hitter in the tournament final as Ireland defeated Belgium by a score of 12-0.
Ireland’s gold medal is the first gold medal for Ireland in international baseball competition.
With their victory, Team Ireland advances to the 2018 18U European A-Pool Championship Tournament. It will be the first A-Pool appearance by Ireland in over two decades of international play.
