Healthy Kidz CIC, a community interest company from County Armagh, Northern Ireland has concluded an historic youth sports camp in the Woodlawn neighborhood of the Bronx, NY. The camp, billed as an Irish American Multi-Sports camp, featured Gaelic Games and baseball. It is believed to be the first such camp of its kind in Ireland or America.
The camp featured instruction from Healthy Kidz coaches in the Gaelic games of hurling and Gaelic football. Baseball instruction was provided by two former Irish Junior National Team coaches, Vin Malzahn, Eric Helmrich, and Dylan Sabia. Coaches Malzahn and Helmrich played at St. Thomas Aquinas and Marist, respectively, before serving as coaches on the first gold medal winning Irish National Baseball Team in 2017. Coach Sabia currently pitches for the University of Oregon.
Baseball United provided logistical support for the camp, in coordination with the St. Barnabas GAA and Woodlean Boys and Girls Club.
Healthy Kidz and Baseball United have been partners in delivering baseball instruction and games to schoolchildren in Northern Ireland since 2021. To date, over 2,000 boys and girls have played baseball for the first time thanks to the partnership.
